KAR Event: Kitsap letter-winners in UW football to be honored

Over the years, 29 Kitsapers are believed to have earned letters at Washington. These players, part of a rich Husky football heritage, will be recognized at the Kitsap Athletic Roundtable meeting that will feature current UW assistant Pete Kwiatkowski on Wednesday night at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club.

KAR Event: A conversation with UW's Coach K

Pete Kwiatkowski had 18 years of coaching experience when he joined Petersen’s staff at Boise State in 2006 and followed him to Washington in 2014. He, better than just about anybody, knows how the Huskies go about their business. The co-defensive coordinator will be the guest speaker at a Kitsap Athletic Roundtable dinner meeting on Wednesday at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club.

KAR Event: Seahawks punter Ryan, comedian wife Sarah featured guests

Jon Ryan doesn't usually come on until it's fourth down. But he's a starter, alongside his wife, Sarah Colonna, for a Kitsap Athletic Roundtable event June 17 at the Bremer Student Center on the Olympic College campus. Ryan, who's been the punter for the Seattle Seahawks since early in the 2008 season, will talk about the upcoming Seahawks season and be joined by Colonna, a veteran stand-up comic and New York Times best-selling author, for a Q&A session. Following an intermission, Colonna will do her stand-up set.

KAR Event: UW radio voice, former assistant coach coming to KAR

Washington Husky broadcaster Tony Castricone and Dick Baird, former UW football assistant/recruiting coordinator and current radio analyst, will be guest speakers at Wednesday’s Kitsap Athletic Roundtable meeting at the Cloverleaf Sports Bar and Grill in East Bremerton. Castricone was the play-by-play voice for Clemson men’s basketball before coming to Washington, where he is currently the voice of Husky basketball. He’ll call Husky football games in the fall.

Stark: Meet the 2017 class of the Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame

It’s a time to recognize our rich sports history, and make sure that history is never forgotten. The reality is, every community needs a Hall of Fame. It’s a way of honoring excellence and connecting generations. This year’s annual celebration — the 30th — happens Jan. 27 at Kiana Lodge in Poulsbo. Since 2005, when the Hall of Fame was expanded to include all sports, 184 athletes and 23 teams have been inducted. You’d think the Kitsap Athletic Roundtable — which took over the event when the Oldtimers Association disbanded — might be running out of deserving candidates, but you’d be wrong.

KAR EVENT: Coaching legend Judt Heathcote featured guest

Jud Heathcote, the burly 1945 South Kitsap graduate who was raised along the shores of Manchester, pulled himself to the top of the college basketball world. The signature moment was a magical season in 1979, when Heathcote’s Magic Johnson-led Michigan State Spartans beat Larry Bird's Indiana State Sycamores 75-64 in the NCAA title game at Salt Lake City. At the Kitsap Athletic Roundtable event, he poked fun at Harshman, the former Washington, Washington State and Pacific Lutheran coach. Jud assisted Harshman seven years at WSU.

Mosher: A happy 50th to the Kitsap Athletic Roundtable

Fifty years ago the non-profit organization that serves amateur sports in the area was born in Bremerton. It first took the name Bremerton Athletic Roundtable and now has expanded its service area and name to Kitsap Athletic Roundtable. The organization raises money and sponsorships through events it hosts – the annual Softball Showcase and Senior All-Star Baseball Games, almost monthly meetings with interesting guest speakers from the world of sports and the annual Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame – and donates proceeds (an average of $10,000 a year) along with a Red Brown Scholarship to youth and amateur athletics in Kitsap County, including the Hammerhead and Olympic Duals wrestling tournaments and the annual Tim Higgins Golf Tournament.

KAR Event: UW AD Jen Cohen featured guest

University of Washington athletic director Jen Cohen will be the guest speaker at the Kitsap Athletic Roundtable meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m. on Jan. 25 at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club. Cohen, hired in May of 2016, is the 15th AD in the school's history. She's the only female AD in the Pac-12 and one of just three at a Power Five Conference school.

Meet the kitsap Sports Hall of Fame's Class of 2016

One of the all-time greats of professional motocross, a legendary Bainbridge basketball player from the 1930s, and one of the most distinguished female athletes of her era headline the 2016 Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame class. Poulsbo’s Ryan Villopoto, Bainbridge’s Ed Loverich and Belfair’s Karen Schillinger Johnson are among 11 athletes or coaches voted into the hall. They’ll be joined by two teams — the 1960 West Bremerton High School football team and the Kitsap Outsiders, one of the premier semi-pro baseball teams in the Pacific Northwest during the early 1970s — along with the Rex Brown Award winner (Kitsap philanthropist and businesswoman Joanne Haselwood) and the Dick Todd Award winner (official John Lambert).
